Why real content feels hard
It is not your discipline. It is the shape of vocabulary: the words you meet most are the ones you already know, and the ones you need next are the ones nobody repeats for you.
The words you still need are the rare ones
The 3,000 most common word families already cover about 95% of what people say on TV, but reading a real article without help takes 8,000 to 9,000 (Nation, 2006 (opens in a new tab)). Every word past that is rarer than the one before it.
Lists aren't enough
Vocabulary comes from meeting words in real sentences, not from a list: learners picked up words simply by reading and listening to ten graded readers, with no word list involved (Webb & Chang, 2015 (opens in a new tab)).
Hearing it helps you learn it
Hearing the language while you see the words written out works on both fronts at once: captioned video has a large effect on listening comprehension and on vocabulary learning (Montero Perez et al., 2013 (opens in a new tab)).
You need more time with the language
Time in the language is what moves you: a meta-analysis of extensive reading found gains in vocabulary, comprehension and motivation, from small to medium across the studies (Sangers et al., 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It may as well go to something you wanted to read.
That is the whole idea behind Goss: real content, adapted to you, instead of another exercise about purple elephants.
